OpenID Support in Blinksale

Today we're adding support for OpenID in Blinksale. OpenID is a standard for single sign-on — allowing you to log in to any supported site without remembering a separate username and password for each one. Blinksale is just the latest among many OpenID-enabled sites, including 37Signals' Basecamp and Highrise, and our own IconBuffet.

To start using OpenID with Blinksale, the first step is to get your own OpenID address. In fact, you probably already have one: any AIM screen name is an OpenID (like openid.aol.com/screenname) and a TypeKey account can be used, too (like profile.typekey.com/username). There are dozens of other free OpenID providers; two that we recommend are MyOpenID and Verisign. Choose a provider, and you'll get an identity URL that can be used at any OpenID-enabled site.

Then simply link your OpenID to your Blinksale account. To do that, click the "People" tab in your Blinksale account, then click the "Edit" link next to your name. Enter your OpenID address on the right side of the screen, and you'll be off.

Once your OpenID is linked to Blinksale, you'll be able to use it every time you log in to Blinksale. At the login form, just click "Login with an OpenID" and enter your OpenID.

Send Invoices as PDF

One of the oft-requested features for Blinksale is now a reality. Today we are pleased to announce that you can now send PDF invoices by email in addition to our standard HTML-formatted invoices.

Many of you have told us about your picky clients who must have their invoices as PDFs "or else", and honestly we know what you're talking about. We have a couple of clients like that as well. We hope this will prove to be a very valuable addition for those who need a little PDF oomph with your billing.

PDF invoicing is available on all Gold and Platinum level Blinksale accounts. If you use the coupon code INEEDPDF2007 when you upgrade your account, you'll receive $10 off your first month's subscription for your new plan.

To send a PDF invoice, you simply need to create an invoice as you normally would, only now when you send it you simply check the Send As PDF box. Pretty easy, eh? We hope you enjoy. Thanks for using Blinksale!

Scheduled Maintenance Tonight

Hello friends! This is a simple reminder to let you know that Blinksale will be offline tonight (Friday, Dec 8) starting at 10pm CST. The downtime may last as long as 4 hours, but in reality we anticipate that this update will go much faster. All the same, it's a Friday night. You shouldn't be invoicing your clients anyhow... go have some fun.

And just so you know, if your account has automated recurring invoices scheduled to be sent during the downtime, no worries. They will simply be sent a couple hours later than normal. They will still be sent though.

We're grateful for your flexibility and understanding as we continue to improve the easiest way to send invoices online. Have fun tonight!

New! Basecamp Integration

We know that many Blinksale subscribers also use the popular Basecamp project management software from 37signals. In fact, we use Basecamp ourselves. We also know that it can be frustrating to enter identical client contact information into multiple web-based applications like Blinksale or Basecamp. In fact, it's a real drag.

Today we're pleased to announce the first round of Basecamp integration for Blinksale. Now it's super-easy to import client names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses directly from Basecamp in your Blinksale account for painless invoicing. Simply add your Basecamp account details to your Blinksale Settings page, and we take care of the rest.

Now, when you create a new invoice in Blinksale, you can quickly import a client from Basecamp (and even synchronize that client with an existing record in Blinksale). Invoicing your Basecamp clients couldn't be easier.

Soon, we'll be adding support for Basecamp projects and time-tracking, creating the ultimate one-two punch: Get your job done—and get paid.

Update: Use the coupon code IHEARTBASECAMP and receive $10 off your first monthly charge when you create a new Blinksale account or upgrade your current Blinksale account to new plan. The coupon is only good for new paid accounts and upgrades, and can only be used once.

Nagging Performance Issues (AKA Growing Pains)

A handful of Blinksale accounts have been experiencing some very slow load times on the Invoices page as of late. Saving invoices has also been problematic for folks with lots of invoices in their account as well. We're aware of both of these issues, and the root cause is basically older servers in need of an upgrade.

We've been planning said server upgrade since July, but a delay in the shipment of our desired hardware has backed us off longer than we had hoped. The good news is that the new hardware is finally on order. The bad news is that it's still backordered a couple more weeks. We're terribly excited about the upgrade because it's going to dramatically improve performance. We just wish we could've made this move earlier.

The growth is a wonderful problem, but we're anxious to get this resolved. We've been working on software fixes as well to help smooth things along, but the bulk of the improvements will be coming in a couple weeks. Thanks to everyone for your patience in the interim.

Blinksale API Launch

In the spirit of making it even easier to send your invoices online, today we're pleased to announce the public release of the Blinksale API. We've been hard at work on this one for quite some time now, and we're thrilled today to roll out it.

We know of several third-party developers already building on top of the Blinksale platform, and we can't wait to see the solutions that come out of this release. We hope to release some examples of the API's use in the near future. If you have questions about the API or would like to brag about what you've done with it, we'd love to hear from you. You can email us at "support [at] blinksale [dot] com".

Invoice Notes, Duplication, and One-Offs

The Blinksale blog has been a bit quiet lately due to the arrival of a new baby here, so I've been a bit out of the office. On the development side though, the engines are churning, and it's time for me to catch up on a few of the recent additions.

First, we've added the long-awaited Invoice Notes field. Now you have a perfect place to store bank account details, additional invoice terms, or anything else you might like to have on your invoices at all times. You can also set your default Notes in your Settings page. It's a nice little feature for those who need it (which appears to be a large contingent of our international customers).

Also new to Blinksale is the new Create Invoice from Template feature. Many of you already use Blinksale's recurring templates to send repeating invoices on a regular schedule. Now you can use a recurring template to create a one-time invoice as well. Simply look for the New One-Time Invoice link on your recurring invoice page. We'll probably be renaming "Recurring Templates" to simply "Templates" soon to reflect this change.

Finally, many of you make Purchases from other Blinksale subscribers. You know that these purchases are stored in your Purchases tab. Now you can duplicate a purchase and create a new Invoice with the purchase data. This is perfect if you work with sub-contractors and need to turn around and bill that work to someone else. Duplicate your purchase, mark up the prices if need be, and send it on to your client.

And there you have the latest. More goodies are on the way, including the long-awaited API. It's very close now. Thanks for your patience.

Putting Blinksale to REST

We've been working on a handful of under-the-hood improvements to Blinksale, and Blinksale subscriber Jason mentioned that it might be nice to hear about those on the blog since its been a bit quiet on the blog lately. Great idea, Jason!

Those of you who follow our other product, IconBuffet, may be aware that we recently rolled out some major improvements to that website (AKA Refactoring to REST, for you nerdy types out there) that greatly improved the speed and performance of the application.

These improvements simplify code, improve performance, and make future updates easier to apply. We're now making these same improvements to Blinksale. Refactoring Blinksale will also give us a new, solid foundation to rebuild the Blinksale API from. We actually had a large chunk of the API completed, but put in on hold until this project is completed as they are tied together.

What does this all mean? Well, Blinksale is going to get a good bit faster soon. We're aware that larger accounts with potentially thousands of invoices can tend to bog down when viewing your invoices. This refactoring, coupled with a server upgrade in September will boost performance quite a bit. At the same time, we should be getting close on the API, so those of you chomping at the bit to integrate Blinksale with you favorite whatever will get your chance.

In the meantime, we're grateful for your patience, and wanted to keep you in the loop on the latest. Thanks for making Blinksale a success!

Support Mail Issues

Boy, sometimes when it rains, it pours. On top of yesterday's bug (which is now fixed), it seems that the software we use to handle our support email has been errantly flagging some legitimate support email as spam.

That said, we just found a handful of messages from customers from weeks past this morning that we have never seen. This makes us feel pretty sick here. We make every effort to respond to support email in a very timely manner, and obviously for a few folks now, this hasn't happened. We're in the process of sorting through this mail, but we cannot guarantee we'll catch every one. We're disappointed in the way this has worked out.

If you've sent support email in the past and you still have an unresolved issue, please feel free to email us again. We will get back to you with a response. To those who have sent email, and have received no response, we apologize. It's no fun to be treated with silence. We're making steps to ensure no email gets left behind from now on. Thank you for your understanding.

Ugg. A Blinksale Hiccup.

This morning we rolled out a minor feature addition to Blinksale, and unfortunately an ugly bug decided to crawl into the release and rear it's detestable head. It seems that for a period of about four hours today, new invoice info would not save (or send), and there were errors in receiving payments on existing invoices.

We've found and fixed the problem, but we understand that this was an unfortunate inconvenience for a few of you this morning. We are very sorry for the mishap. We know that handling your accounts receivable is a very important responsibility, and we're making steps to ensure this won't happen again.

If you have any questions about all this, please feel free to contact us at the support email link at the bottom of your Blinksale dashboard page. Again, we're very sorry for the inconvenience.

Duplicating Invoices

Alright, so here's the deal: You've created an invoice, saved it, and sent it. And now you want to re-use all that invoice information for the same client again, or better yet, an entirely different client. A few days ago that meant re-entering all of your invoice data over again.

Today, you can simply click Duplicate Invoice. Open an existing invoice, click Duplicate, enter a client name, and click Create. Bingo. Done. A new invoice is created from the previous invoice's data. It's a simple, slick solution, and hopefully it saves you a little time every now and then. Enjoy!

Have Your Tax Identification Your Way

We've heard from a handful of our international subscribers that calling their business' organizational number by the name "Tax ID" or "FEIN" on their invoice simply won't cut it for localized tax issues. So now you can rename the "Tax ID" field whatever you want. Call it VAT Number, call it ABN, or simply call it a nice, simple feature that makes your invoices clearer for your clients.

Simply go to your Account Settings page and click Invoice Details. Change the field name as you desire and save it. All your invoices (and your client summary page) will reflect you new details.

Client-Level Recurring Schedules

Since we launched Blinksale 2.0 (I still hate calling it that), folks have been asking for the ability to schedule recurring invoices templates at a client level. This feature has now been added. Previously, recurring templates had a standard start date that applied to all clients using that invoice template.

Now, each client can have their own start date. We know all those who provide web hosting services are thrilled because now an invoice template can kick off invoices to different clients on different days. This is probably something that should have been obvious to us when we added recurring templates in the first place, but in our effort to simplify the feature set, we missed this one. A big thank-you to our subscribers for speaking up.

Hope you all enjoy this one. It should make invoicing clients for repeating, common services a very easy thing to do. We're still the easiest way to send invoices online.

Blinksale Loves Microformats

Some of our more observant subscribers have noticed some markup changes under the Blinksale hood. Notably, Blinksale now supports the hcard Microformat on all people entries. This includes the markup of client names and contact information on your invoices.

So what does this mean? While trying my best to avoid geeking out too much here, It means that we're doing our best to simplify the way data is presented within the Blinksale application using semantic XHTML and existing data format standards.

While broad adoption of Microformats is still a bit off in the future, their adoption and use by web applications and services like Blinksale will mean that the web is a much friendlier place to play in the future. Microformats are a building block that makes it easier for disparate applications to share like kinds of information back and forth. This is a key to success for web applications to broaden their appeal to the general public.

We know its not fun to have to reenter your client's contact information for every web application you use. But with building blocks like microformats and web service APIs, the future for web applications should be bright. And our implementation of microformats will not simply stop with the hcard. We're also looking for other ways to improve the semantic markup of our application to ensure that Blinksale is not just the easiest way to send invoices online. It should also be the friendliest too.

Filter by Client & Delete Comments

A few minor updates were pushed out today for Blinksale. First off, we've now added client filtering to your invoice page. Now Blinksale makes it a breeze to recall all invoices you sent to Microsoft last year tagged "stevie-b". Can't beat that now, can you? We had actually hoped to have client filtering included in the 2.0 released, but it was delayed just a little. We're happy to get it out there now.

Second, on a minor note, you can now delete recorded history items (like comments) from an invoice as well. I should note that deleting the record of a payment is not the same as deleting the payment itself. There are instances where you might want to clear out some history items though as to not overwhelm your clients with outdated or irrelevant information. Hope you enjoy!

Blinksale API News

One of big features promised in the Blinksale 2.0 update was the addition of the Blinksale API. I'm sure some of you are wondering where that is, and I'm very happy to say that it will be released very soon. The API is actually complete, but we're still wrapping up the documentation for it. In fact, we've been using the Blinksale API for some time to run the invoicing and receipt system for IconBuffet, our sister site for stock digital icons.

Stay tuned here. We'll be announcing more on the API in the days to come. More than anything, I'm stoked to see what solutions the Blinksale community brings to the table. Maybe we should host a contest. Hmm... ideas ideas. More to follow.

Recurring Headache

This is a quick post to let everyone know that since we launched a few days ago, there have been some inconsistencies in the way recurring invoice templates have been processing. Basically, they are working fine for some folks, and for others the invoices are not being sent at all. Which is obviously not ideal.

We're aware of the problem, and are working on it right now so that everyone can send happy recurring invoices in short order. That said, if you're looking to create a bunch of recurring templates today, you might hold off until tomorrow for good measure. We apologize for the inconvenience, and certainly appreciate your patience in the meantime.

One final note: Many have asked about setting a recurring schedule at a client level, as opposed to a template level. This is also in the works, and should be rolled out soon.

Somethings Afoot

While we haven't officially announced anything yet, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that some changes are happening around Blinksale. We've begun the rollout of the new site, UI, and functionality. We're extremely grateful for those who have already kicked the tires on the update, written in with praise and bug reports, and in general the good vibe surrounding our soft launch over the last 18 hours.

We'll be making an official announcement soon, along with information regarding the new features and Blinksale API. We know many of you have been waiting on that for a while, and we're grateful for your patience. We think you'll be happy with the result.

On a side note, our hosting provider went down for about an hour this morning. Though out of our control, we're certainly sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Again, thanks for using Blinksale. More news to follow.

Blinksale 2.0: Coming Very Soon

We sent out an email yesterday to our friends and current Blinksale subscribers to alert them of the pending Blinksale 2.0 upgrade. This is what we have to say about the upcoming launch:

After several months of planning, design, and development Blinksale 2.0 will be released to the general public in less than two weeks. You read right: Less than two weeks.

Blinksale 2.0 is no small upgrade, and we believe you'll be thrilled with the improvements. Here are just a handful of the new features in store:

  • - Recurring auto-billing (great for web hosts!)
  • - Invoice filtering (by date-range, client, tag, etc.)
  • - Invoice tracking (when sent, to whom, etc.)
  • - Invoice printing
  • - Improved support for international tax regulations
  • - Full PayPal IPN support
  • - Blinksale API

There are, in fact, a few other large features being added to Blinksale, but we're not going to talk about them now. You'll just have to wait and see when the upgrade is rolled out. That said, we believe Blinksale 2.0 might just change your entire mindset about online billing.

While the server upgrade for Blinksale 2.0 should go smoothly, we anticipate that their may be some minimal server downtime (a couple hours at most). We appreciate your patience as we make the change. The upgrade will be well worth the wait.

With the rollout of Blinksale 2.0, we will also be raising our monthly subscription rates. Our new base rate will start at $12 per month. However, we have happy news for you: All existing Blinksale subscribers will receive their current monthly rate for a period of 24 billing months starting in May 2006. That's right, all current Blinksale subscribers will still be billed at their current rate for 2 more years.

This is a simple way we can say thank you for being an early Blinksale subscriber. We're grateful for your support. In addition, anyone who subscribes to Blinksale before the upgrade will also receive the current pricing (starting at $6 a month) for a period of two years. If you've been holding out to try Blinksale, now is the time to sign up for your paid account. Remember, if you don't like Blinksale (hard to imagine), you can cancel your service at any time.

This offer is only valid for Silver, Gold, or Platinum accounts created BEFORE Blinksale 2.0 is released. If you upgrade or downgrade your account AFTER Blinksale 2.0 is released, you will be subject to the new pricing. You can sign up for your Blinksale today!

Finally, a word to our subscribers using custom CSS invoice templates: With the launch of Blinksale 2.0, we will be updating the HTML email template used in our invoice layouts. This will break your custom CSS design. The new template is similar to the previous template however, and you should be able to fix your CSS without too much hassle. After the launch, we do recommend changing to a standard Blinksale-designed template in the interim until you can update your CSS to be compatible with our new HTML invoice template.

I realize many of you may have questions about the new service, and feel free to send them on. We'll do our best to get back with you, but understand that some questions will simply have to be answered after the launch. We're busy finalizing the release, and we still have a few secrets to keep.

Update: A few folks have asked about our Blinksale Free account. Our free account will remain virtually unchanged. A few new features are being added, but the account limitations will remain more or less the same. If you current have a Blinksale Free account and choose not to upgrade, your account will retain its same Free status. However, if you choose to upgrade after the 2.0 launch, you will be subject to the new monthly rates.

The Problem with AVS

This is a dual-purpose memorandum and rant regarding AVS for credit card processing. AVS (Address Verification System for the uninitiated) is a standard developed by Mastercard and Visa to help fight fraudulent credit card purchases over the internet. By and large, I think we'd all agree that this is a good thing. Unfortunately, this system is unbelievably flawed.

Over the weekend we tightened down the AVS for both our Blinksale and IconBuffet credit card processing code, and ever since our life here has been a royal headache. In theory, AVS is great. A billing address entered by a customer is cross-checked with the billing address on supply from the card-issuing bank to ensure the card is in the right hands.

Unfortunately if you, the customer, say that you live at "123 Blueberry Street" and the bank says that you live at "123 Blueberry St", your card will choke. What's worse, if you live in an apartment and enter your unit number as "#212"—while your bank is looking for "Apt 212"—the card will choke. But wait, that's still not my favorite:

Let's say you live at "135 18th Street", AVS will tell your bank that you live at "13518 Th Steet". This of course is most definitely a recipe for failure. And don't get me started on international addresses or PO Boxes (or is it P.O. Boxes?).

AVS is supposed to be this great thing to protect merchants from fraud. I applaud that. But whoever created the system really messed the sucker up. About a third of all legitimate charges that have been attempted at Blinksale or IconBuffet over the last 48 hours have been declined due to false-negative responses. We've lost sleep, sanity, time, and sales.

Now we're frantically working to reverse engineer the whole thing to find an acceptable medium between keeping out the bad guys and letting in the good guys. If this is what AVS has to offer, the folks at Visa and Mastercard need to go back to the drawing board.

Server Weirdness Across the Pond

We've received reports from a handful of users in Europe this morning that Blinksale.com has been inaccessible. These reports have been further complicated by the fact that as far as we know, the server has been up and running just fine, and has had no access problems in the U.S.

We're still trying to pinpoint the cause of this, but as of this post Blinksale.com is up and running fine. Of course, if you're in the United Kingdom, you won't be reading this it seems until after the problem is remedied. Seems like the European ISPs don't like us today.

XML Data Exporting

Ever since the inception of Blinksale, we've believed that your data should be just that: your data. While this rollout has taken us a little longer than we had hoped, XML exporting has now been added to all Blinksale accounts. Simply visit your Account page to download your invoices, clients, and contact information to an XML file.

We should note that a full-service API is in the works, and it will follow a different structure than the exported XML file. So if you plan on spending a bunch of time implementing your own additional functionality to Blinksale, we recommend waiting for the API.

The XML export is best used for back-ups for the time being. Of course, you can do whatever you want to with it. Just remember a full set of tools is coming soon. In the meantime, you can now drop your data like its hot.

The Reboot that Ate Blinksale

Well, as many of you have noticed, Blinksale was down for a large part of the last 24 hours. We're extremely sorry for this inconvenience, and are relieved to say that it is back up and running. This was not a scheduled downtime. Best as we can tell, someone at our hosting company rebooted our server, and it booted into the wrong webserver environment. We're taking care of this so it should never happen again.

Sadly, it went down while two of us were switching off vacation time (I'm returning, John is leaving), and neither of us were here when it went down. Again, we apologize for the downtime. Time is important, and we're very sorry that we wasted some of yours today. Thanks for your patience.

Update: We've apprehended the culprit of the Blinksale downtime. A faulty UPS was to blame. It has now been replaced, and all should be happy. Again, we're sorry for the inconvenience.

Custom Notes on Invoices

As the resident help writer and support guy, I can say with a relatively high degree of confidence that one of the most-requested new features for Blinksale has been the option to add custom notes to outgoing invoices. You'd like a way to thank the client for their business, suggest some preferred payment methods and throw in a tax ID or GST number.

Well, I'm pleased to report that the option is now available. When you go to send a saved invoice in Blinksale, you'll see a message box in the pop-up panel. Just type your note there and send that bill on its way. Your note will show up in a dedicated message section at the top of the invoice.

Stay tuned for even more improvements to Blinksale!

Blinksale Update & Currency Support

Yesterday we rolled out a handful of additions and bug fixes to Blinksale. Most noticeable is the addition of over 160 supported currencies.

PayPal payments will still only be supported by the U.S. Dollar, Canadian Dollar, British Pound, Euro, and Australian Dollar. This is a PayPal limitation however, not a limitation on the part of Blinksale.

Additionally, Atom feeds are now supported with full HTML. You can no-longer double-click "save invoice" on accident, and line-items over $1 billion dollars are now allowed. Scott noted that this now makes Blinksale the perfect choice for Congress. 26 other various bugs were also squashed yesterday.

Thousands are sending invoices with Blinksale. Are you?

The Blinksale Manifesto

We've posted the Blinksale Manifesto at our Sparkplug Blog for those who would like to catch a glimpse of the ideas driving Blinksale. We'll move the Manifesto to this site after Blinksale launches, but for now it's there for all to see. From the Manifesto:

Put simply, receiving payment for services performed or goods sold is why most of us work. While many small business owners, contractors, and freelancers enjoy the work they perform, most of us would rather be skiing. Or on a lake. Or in front of a 60-inch plasma TV.
